The Soundtrack To Our Life

I had a friend in school who loved everything about music. A music geek, if you will. He would eventually go on to make his own.

I remember one day in sixth form, he decided to be funny. Every time somebody walked into our common room, he would play a piece of music from his laptop. It was like giving everyone a theme song.

It was entertaining. Some people had a silly, jaunty track (indicating class clown). Some had electric guitar riffs (indicating ultra-cool, rockstar vibe). I remember I had some smooth jazz, saxophone piece (indicating… maybe I was cool and laid-back? I’m not sure but it was a fun piece to walk to).

This memory came to me because recently I’ve had songs and tracks in my head to help me though everyday life. I’m not sure why but it helps. It helps set me in the right mood for the day.

I like to start the day off with a positive, happy song. If I’m feeling a little low, a slow piano track can help me to process that feeling. To relieve stress, a loud angry-sounding (usually electric guitar-driven) song is a good choice.

Obviously everybody is different. Some people prefer happy songs to pull them out of a bad mood. Some might prefer to relieve the bad mood through angry-sounding music. Or some might have calming music to calm themselves down.

My absolute favourite at the moment is Super Duper Love Love Days from Cardcaptor Sakura (one of my favourite animes!) I don’t speak Japanese but even without knowing the lyrics, the song gives me a positive feeling, full of hope – enough to get me through any bad days I might be having.

Hooray for the power of music 🙂
